Outside Looking In

Lately I can’t shake this feeling of being on the outside.

This is both real, true and also untrue.

I am part of what I choose to be a part of.

I belong.

I belong to myself.

I belong everywhere I bring myself.

I belong nowhere.

Still.

There is something core, crater deep that haunts and has followed me around for longer than five decades.

And I have kept it going.

Messages. Actions. Narratives. Impulses. Bloodlines. Scars that live inside of me. Scars that are visible on the outside. On the outside. On the outside. I’m on the outside looking in.

I’m on the outside.

I don’t have to be.

In literal terms, I am not part of my own family.

I am not part of any family. Yet, I am part of a few families. Gorgeous families who invite me in deeply as part of their own. When they do.

Those invitations are extraordinary, beautiful. Humbling. Exquisite. And ordinary.

They are life-giving, soul medicine alchemical shifts. Being “part of.” Trusting. Trusting again. Loving deep. Being with experiences.

I am a true member when I am. Initiated. Loved. Purely. Not disregarded. I am accepted purely.

Families have survival mechanisms that are pure. Natural. Instinctual. They enclose and cloister themselves. They shelter in place. They go into lockdown. There is a certain perimeter that an outsider must keep to in order for the family to maintain its homeostasis, like an electric fence.

They express a precise silence.

They maintain rules and rituals.

Some strengthening. Some decimating. Depending on the lens through which an outsider views, chooses and follows.

Some views have a tight seal. And I find myself once again standing in front of the ballistic glass sealed window, watching the world go by after my accident those 5 decades ago.

No one can hear me. No one. I am safe. But what from?

I remember this view and this glass and this soundlessness.

It lives inside of me.

I’m on the inside looking out.

No sound.

I’m searching for my first family.

This is my first dark night

and I am safe under this seal. So safe in this soundless hallway.

I come from a family system where the solution was black and white.

You were either in or you were thrown out.

“You are either with us or you’re not.”

We had a garbage disposal when I was around 8. And I remember the eerie sounds it would make, the way it would crash/ compost down on the garbage to make room for more garbage. It injured someone once very badly. The blood I witnessed was unforgiving. Crash. Down. Garbage. Out. Black. White.

Where did they go?

I’m in the hallway. What are the rules here?

Rule #1: “If you don’t listen, I’m gone.”

(Evidence: My father lives somewhere else.)

Rule #2: “You are not allowed in whenever I decide.”

(Evidence: My sister’s door is closed intermittently)

Rule #3: “Children are to be seen and not heard.”

(Evidence: Disputed this one too many times to name…)

Rules are important, necessary boundaries, but they need to make sense to an organized brain looking in from the outside.

I look to God to help me find my way. To help me remember that even alone, I am never alone. And when I fail at remembering, I ask for forgiveness. Mine and His. And I begin again. Again and again.

This practice. This navigation. This forgetting. And remembering and surrendering. Devoting.

Is ongoing. Loving. It is interior and when steadfast and rock solid, it manifests exteriorly, the way a turtle brings its own dwelling everywhere it goes, always knowing itself to be at home.

*

So what do I do when I am on the outside?

When I feel like I am on the outside?

Lately, I have begun to do a few new things:

I’ve reframed the narrative.

The invitations are precious when they come.

I can keep my heart open even if someone else’s fence is up.

Meaning, I don’t have to erect one of my own, literally or figuratively.

(Maybe I don’t have the full story and maybe they are in survival mode.)

I can keep everyone in my heart and grow my capacity for compassion even while I may feel like an outsider.

I can continue to build muscles around what it is like to change. To change a story, an old one, a new one. A story that has not yet begun.

I pray.

And then something magical happens.

I see signs. Everywhere.

I get outside and beyond myself by doing something tangible, concrete for other humans with and without family several times each week. To give, offer and demonstrate what it is to be welcome and to belong.

I am on the outside.

I am outside.

I am.

I am.

I am here.

I am.

I am.

I am

loved.

I am love.

Everyday

I welcome myself home.

Everyday

I remember.

I forget.

I remind myself again.

I belong

… everywhere.

Magic - Part deux

I called her Magic.

My body was not an easy negotiation.

I came roaring out of the womb 3.5 early and was on the small side. Was always first in line when asked to stand in size order. I had a lot of unfavorable nicknames for which I overcompensated with willfulness.

I came out small and full of fire into this great mysterious world with a precise gps that pointed and awakened me to trouble as skillfully as it did to safety.

My hurt body found a safe harbor on her shores.

She never gave up on me.

She was a combination of abiding discipline, dedication, perseverance, unwavering loyalty, good humor, humility, wholehearted living, artistry, curiosity, clarity, incisive truth, exquisite boundaries, a quest for learning, and explosive pockets of joy.

She could straddle the tension of limbo in my own life and in hers.

She taught me well and she is still teaching me beyond her body and beyond my own.

She is Magic.

She will always be Magic.

She was more than a body. More than a name. More than a teacher. More than a list of things I can name here.

She is.

She is.

She is

Magic.

AND PLEASE STAY TUNED...

About the series:

Having walked the path of estrangement from my biological family for nearly two decades, I have found that this is far too often a subject that goes underground and is unrelatable but one which requires deep re-organizing, deep healing, ongoing re-identification and becoming. I am compelled to cultivated a safe space to ask others to lay the burden downs of abandonment, betrayal, and begin to reclaim and name the self-honoring that the work takes to live in the world without those who live and have lived without us or those we have chosen to live without. To speak about forgiveness. To speak about reclamation of self. To speak about loss. To speak about reclamation of self in this specific way. Most importantly, to not turn away. To turn toward. * Jill has an MSW, an M.A. in Writing, she's been an Activist and Organizer and considers this conversation a portal to our healing.

I am here to reimagine ways to find new language of inclusion and healing around the experience of estrangement that many people walk or have walked. I hope you will feel inspired to join me as we walk this path together and tear down the walls any stand between us.

Dedication: June 25, 1964

She is the first I protected, the first who I loved, the first who rejected me.

I woke her up each morning and I knocked on her door every night to see if there was a way inside.

There was a wall between us and I was listening from inside of it. Slowly. Steadily. Unwavering.

Fifty some odd years later, here I am.

Loving you from here.

The walls you erected were yours to build and although I sometimes wonder and sit and wait, I know that they are yours. They are strong. Too strong for me to peer through.

I see you down the street laughing when a young person has clothes on that you might disapprove of. And I shake. And pray and love her along the way.

I see you when my hair falls a certain way and for a moment I don’t know where I am.

I see you laughing at me and even though it hurts, I see you. Hurting.

I see my neighbor, in the hospital, donating her bone marrow to her sister, the only perfect match in her large Italian family. I see the family. Watching. Waiting. Praying. Unwavering. In their love. In their presence. In their hope. In their definition of family.

I see myself in them, alone, in them, knowing I am in isolation, behind a wall, in my donation. Giving something that could never be given me. But knowing myself. Always knowing where it comes from. Always knowing where it is going.

This.

*

I don’t know where you are in the world any longer. You’ve shown me that you no longer wish for me to know.

But the borders around my heart are made of a great tapestry. Of grace. Of gentleness. And of untamed definitions of a word given to me at birth. I hold it in my heart as mantra. As prayer.

Sister. Sister. (I am) My sister.

Tap softly.

Soberversary

Some things I learned this year:

If I want to show up, I need to find my footing.

“Strong back, soft front.”

Compassion is a hard earned practice.

You can save your own life by putting the time in.

Save your body. Save your heart. Save your energy. And love even deeper. Love yourself and love others.

Loving yourself is where it’s at. It is a roadmap to healing. To recovery. To your vulnerabilities and to your non-negotiable places.

Much of this being human is accepting life on life’s terms. Like the weather. You can prepare all you want, but when the storm comes, it’s about how and who you are during the storm that counts.

You can try to fight, but the storm is going to come when it comes and it will leave when it leaves.

It’s also about how long you stay with what has already moved away.

*

Prayer is medicine.

My favorite prayers come in whispers.

May I meet this moment fully.

May I meet this moment with love.

May I meet this moment as a friend.

I brought this to many situations that came my way.

When met with challenging individuals, I began to shift from “fuck you” to “bless you.” In my moments of blessing, I began to see and say, “I am you.” “Thank you.” And through those blessings, I was blessing myself with love. And ultimately, I began thanking each person for helping me grow.

In doing so repeatedly, and with practice, I felt my heart soften and open and help me remember more and more about what I valued as important.

I asked myself where I was resistant to love. Where I was resistant to forgiveness. Where I was resistant to opening… and I stayed curious in those places… and those things began to shift again and again.

I worked on my amends. I worked on them steadily fiercely and ferociously.

My life was forever changed. My heart grew exponentially.

In working on the steps, I excavated a lot of trauma, no question. However, I also built within me, a greater capacity for resilience and steadiness and compassion. And even when I would feel a new hurt or harm, I would no longer carry that hurt or harm forward.

There are two areas, however, that I still must account for which need ongoing love, and practice:

abandonment and trust

These two places still lay naked and tender inside of me and have many walks ahead of them before they can properly rest.

One thing I see clearly is that I have not abandoned myself and that I trust myself deeply.

Another is that I have begun to place my faith and trust in god and believe that god loves me exactly as I am which is a profoundly healing elixir.

Just as I was forever changed by my amends, that shift began even before it began. The reason for that was that it began on a soul level. It is the same with god. A tectonic shift is happening in my soul where the ego has no say. There is no place for the ego to get jammed up.

A soul healing has begun and I have peace.

Peace.

Forgiveness.

And love in places that melt me honor me hold me guide me strengthen me

Carry me.

May it be so.

Happy Soberversary to me.
